3 Non-Nano Natural Sunscreens I Can't Summer Without!

Yours truly, sailing in Ibiza

Summer is in full swing in the Baleares and it's time to get wise about sun protection to protect ourselves in the upcoming months of pool, beach, surfing, and sailing!

Growing up in Southern California, I remember coating myself in Coppertone. I'm not sure if that was doing more harm than good, but I got smarter about sun care during my first pregnancy 15 years ago. I ditched toxic, endocrine disrupting skincare and for the most part sunscreens too, although back then it was harder to find natural chemical free products that didn't leave white streaks or stain clothes. I went through so many different (and disappointing) brands that I bought at Whole Foods—because they were one of the only stores back then to carry non-toxic skincare—but today the formulas are so incredible, you'd use them even if it wasn't for sun protection! I’ve been using a few skincare products by Juice Beauty for the last three years and started using their sunscreens two years ago. Until I find better or better priced products, they're staying in my arsenal this summer too!

All Juice Beauty products are formulated without parabens, petroleum, propylene or butylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfates, pesticides, phthalates, artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances, and are never tested on animals! Their sunscreen products are also made with certified organic ingredients and use Zinc Oxide 20% as the active ingredient, making them great protection for people with melasma too!

I'm so impressed with Juice Beauty and it's a company I really trust. I even adore their name! Like my food, I also want my skincare to be full of antioxidant-rich, age-fighting plants, not chemicals!

If you want to know more about their powerful plant ingredients, take a look at their Clean Beauty Challenge infographic.

Rule #1: the skin on my face is NEVER exposed to the sun. I let the rest of my body collect the vitamin D sun rays!

I wake up and do my morning skin ritual, then even in the dead of winter, because I use a retinoid cream that makes my face skin very sun sensitive, I apply Juice Beauty STEM CELLULAR CC Cream in Natural Glow, which protects your skin with SPF 30 while feeding it moisture and antioxidants, and giving it a healthy glow with just a hint of blurring. I then just touch up needed areas with a little concealer. You can choose one of the five shades, and as they're made without artificial dyes, the subtle color blends and adapts to skin tones beautifully. So many BB and CC creams add color that sits on my sit, which I really don't like. This sublime product just smoothes and enhances it!

If I know I'll be in the sun more than one hour, I'll first apply the CC Cream, then follow with Juice Beauty’s Oil-Free SPF 30 Moisturizer for added protection. Most sunscreen moisturizers are too rich for my face, but this protects with broad spectrum non-nano natural mineral zinc oxide without clogging my pores, but still feels moisturizing thanks to the amazing hydrating ingredients: nourishing organic aloe, algae, vegetable hyaluronic acid, and great vitamins for the skin too! It goes on smoothly and because it has zinc, it looks a little white, but only for a few minutes until it sinks in. I'll then follow (again) with the CC Cream on the cheeks because I love the glow it gives. For reapplications during the day, l'll rub a little of the Oil-Free SPR 30 Moisturizer on my fingertips and gently pat it onto my face—even on top of my makeup. It actually makes my skin look fresh and dewy again. Just be sure to pat it in and not rub so you don’t disturb your makeup! If it's too much, use a blotting tissue to soak up extra shine on the forehead and nose because we want glow, not shine . . . pat, pat, pat!

In the warmer months, unless I'm on the beach, on a boat, or doing outdoor sport, I just use extra virgin coconut oil as a double duty moisturizer and a little natural sun protector! Coco oil is a bit too rich when I need to wear jeans and a sweater in the winter, so I switch to sweet almond or jojoba oil in cold weather, but I don’t mind smelling like coconuts in the summer—in fact, I love it! And since sun exposure is the most optimal way for vitamin D synthesis, it's important to catch some unblocked rays. It's over exposure that is dangerous.

But most summer days, I need more than coconut oil, which is less than SPF 10. Since I’m a California-girl-beach-bum at heart, I'm often at the beach six months of the year, but I try to go in the late afternoon. I’ve been living in Mallorca for five years, so I don't like crowded beaches anyway, which is why my family and I usually head out after 4pm--even as late as 6pm—and stay until the sun sets. It's my favorite time on the beach because we can relax after a day's work, even do yoga without too many people around, watch the sunset, and then go for dinner (we tend to eat dinner quite late during the kids summer vacation, just like the Spanish!).

For outdoorsy summer days, I love Juice Beauty SPF 30 Sport Sunscreen, which is water-resistant up to 80 minutes! This is the most amazing sport sunscreen! It contains organic coconut, aloe, jojoba, and vitamins C and E and blends really well without leaving white streaks or staining clothes.

My kids wear this safe sunscreen too, as well as hats and cotton coverups during the day and surfer rash guards for water sports. I always put sunscreen on their delicate facial skin, but after 5pm, we forgo the body parts and let them go sunscreen free and soak up their vitamin D!

There's very little hiding from the sun when we sail around the Balearic Islands, so I apply Juice Beauty SPF 30 Sport Sunscreen throughout the day, but as Juice Beauty puts so many skin loving ingredients in their sunscreens, they multi-task as a great moisturize too. And as it’s competitively priced too, I don’t mind slathering it on!

Wishing you healthy fun in the sun all summer long!
